CAR-T Cell Therapy in China

Multiple approved products, a national published price range, and an all-in course from ≈ $170,000 — against US full-treatment costs of $550,000–850,000.

The Basics

What is CAR-T therapy?

CAR-T (chimeric antigen receptor T-cell) therapy is a personalized immunotherapy: your own T cells are collected, engineered in a lab to recognize a marker on cancer cells, multiplied, and infused back after a short course of conditioning chemotherapy. It is a single-course hospital treatment typically involving 2–4 weeks of inpatient monitoring, including management of possible side effects such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS).

China has one of the world's largest approved CAR-T markets, with multiple domestically developed products approved by the national regulator (NMPA) and in routine clinical use at major hospitals — including for multiple myeloma, large B-cell lymphoma, and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL).

Honest boundary: whether CAR-T is appropriate for a specific case is a medical decision made by treating physicians after reviewing complete records — including prior treatment lines and disease status. We coordinate the review; we never make the judgment ourselves, and we cannot promise any outcome.
Who It May Be Evaluated For

Commonly reviewed indications

Hospital departments commonly evaluate CAR-T for:

Multiple myeloma

BCMA-targeted products after prior lines of therapy — the most common adult indication in China.

Large B-cell lymphoma

Relapsed / refractory DLBCL and related subtypes after at least two prior lines.

B-ALL (children & young adults)

Relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia — pediatric protocols available at dedicated children's hospitals.

Other B-cell malignancies

Selected follicular lymphoma, MCL and CLL cases, reviewed case by case.

Costs, In Two Layers

What CAR-T actually costs in China

CAR-T pricing has two separate layers, and understanding both is the only way to read a realistic quote:

LayerChinaNotes
1 — The cell productthe engineered cells themselves$137,000 – 179,000National list prices, published and identical for every patient — Chinese or international. There is no "foreigner price" on the drug itself. Currently five approved products across this range.
2 — Hospital servicesconditioning chemo, 2–4 weeks monitored inpatient stay (often in a protected single room), labs, CRS management≈ $21,000 – 60,000
international-department pricing
Local-patient services run ≈ $14,000 – 42,000; international departments typically price 1.5–2× local rates. Severe CRS requiring ICU care increases this layer.
All-in typical rangefrom ≈ $170,000
typical band $150,000 – 230,000
US full-treatment costs for approved CAR-T products are reported at ≈ $550,000 – 850,000, against drug list prices of $373,000 – 475,000 for the products alone.
Pediatric B-ALL reference point: the lowest-priced approved Chinese product lists at ≈ $137,000 — the same class of comparison as Novartis' Kymriah, approved for pediatric B-ALL in the US, at a list price of $475,000 for the product alone. Both figures are drug-only list prices; hospital services are additional in both countries. Final costs are always determined by the treating hospital in a written quote — these figures are reference ranges compiled from published 2025–2026 data.
Outcomes, Same Drug In Two Trials

How do the results compare — China vs US?

The strongest comparison is ciltacabtagene autoleucel (cilta-cel): a CAR-T product developed in China that is now also FDA-approved, and which was tested in pivotal trials in both countries. Same product, two geographies — the response rates are directly comparable.

Trial & productPublished response ratesDetails
CARTIFAN-1China pivotal trial — basis of the 2024 NMPA approvalOverall response 87.9%
Complete response or better 79.3%
Heavily pretreated myeloma patients. Median follow-up 37 months; median progression-free survival 30 months (NCT03758417).
CARTITUDE-1US pivotal trial — same product, basis of the FDA approvalOverall response 98%
About one third still progression-free at 5 years
Similar relapsed/refractory myeloma population (NCT03548207; 5-year follow-up reported at EHA 2025).
These are published response rates from registration trials — they describe how the product performed in those study populations, not a promise for any individual case. The two trials enrolled different patients and assessed responses on different schedules, so the numbers are indicative of the same product's performance in both geographies, not a head-to-head comparison. Individual results vary, and response is not a guarantee of outcome. Suitability for any CAR-T product is decided by the treating physicians after reviewing your full case.
The Journey

How we coordinate a CAR-T case

1
Initial Case Review

You send diagnosis, treatment history and recent reports; we confirm which hospitals and products realistically fit.

2
Costs confirmed in writing

Your case is presented to suitable hematology departments; you receive written quotes and plans before committing to anything.

3
Travel & admission

Visa invitation letter, flights and accommodation near the hospital are arranged before you fly.

4
Cell collection & manufacturing

Leukapheresis (cell collection) is performed; manufacturing typically takes 2–4 weeks — some patients have bridging therapy during this window.

5
Conditioning & infusion

Short conditioning chemotherapy, then the cell infusion, followed by monitored inpatient care — usually in a protected single room — for 2–4 weeks.

6
Discharge & follow-up planning

Interpreter-supported discharge, English documents where the hospital provides them, and a follow-up plan — including medication refills on later trips.
